Introduction: Strawberry Vanilla Ice Cream With Balsamic Vinegar

This is a recipe for my homemade Strawberry Vanilla Ice Cream with Balsamic Vinegar. I know it sounds crazy to put Balsamic Vinegar on Ice Cream. It took some convincing for me to try it as well, but I sure am glad I did! My family recently went on a vacation to Hilton Head, South Carolina. While we were there I found a little shop called the Oilerie . They primarily sold flavored olive oils, but the store had a Balsamic Vinegar that was aged 25 years. I bought a bottle and they asked if I had ever tried it on Vanilla Ice Cream or Strawberries. I had heard of it but never tried it. When I got home I was thinking of a way to use it and thought of this. I really enjoyed it! If you are ever in Hilton Head, check out the Oilerie! This place was awesome!! You can sample all of their oils. They will bottle & cork whatever you like on the spot. Very Cool Place!! Thanks for checking this out!! I hope you enjoy!!

Step 1: Ingredients

Here is what you will need:

4 Eggs (yolks only)

2 Vanilla Bean Pods

1 cup Sugar

1/2 cup Honey

1 Pint Whole Milk

1 Pint Half & Half

1 Pint Heavy Cream

1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract

1 Pint Strawberries

Good Balsamic Vinegar (Watch out for the cheap stuff. It isn't always very good.)

Step 2: Lets Get Cooking.

Go ahead and separate the eggs. You only need the yolks. Next split the vanilla beans and scrape all those delicious seeds out. Place both the seeds and the vanilla bean stems into a pot with the egg yolks, sugar, honey, milk, cream & half and half. Cook on low heat for 10 mins. You just want to scald the mixture! Never let it reach a boil! While this is cooking, cut up your strawberries into about 1/2 inch pieces. Go ahead and add your strawberries to the egg yolk mixture. Cook for another 10 mins. If you want, you can mash up the strawberries or just leave them alone - its all up to you!! Finally after your mixture has cooked, add vanilla extract and remove vanilla bean stems. Let mixture cool before placing in the ice cream maker and freezing as per your ice cream maker's instructions. Mine took about 45 mins. for the maker to do its magic. Pour ice cream into a container and place in your freezer to harden for a few hrs. If you don't have an Ice Cream maker, there are ways to still freeze your ice cream. So don't be discouraged from trying to make homemade Ice Cream. I personally have never made it any other way, but it can be done with a bit of research. Trust me, it will taste fine however you freeze it!!

Step 3: Let the Fun Begin!!

Scoop out your ice cream into your favorite bowl, drizzle with your Balsamic Vinegar & dig in!

I hope you enjoyed this instructable. Again if you haven't ever tried Balsamic Vinegar on your ice cream, please give it a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised!!

Thanks again!!
