Introduction: Thermocolor (Color Change) Coasters

About: I am a Mad Scientist and IT gal with a passion for projects. I love figuring out puzzles, solving problems, and finding out new ways to get things done!

I love anything thermocolor and am in the process of turning my life into a color-change paradise. It all started with a couple batches of DIY thermocolor paint

What is thermocolor paint?

  • Thermocolor paint is paint that changes color based on the temperature.

If you liked my Instructable on how to make it, you're probably wondering what it can do!

These coasters are my lastest installment in my thermocolor obsession, and I'm gonna show you how to make them!

Here is What You Will Need:

  • Blank Ceramic Tiles (You can find these at Hobby Lobby or Michael's)
  • Thermocolor Paint
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (If your tiles were unsealed like mine)
  • Paper Towels
  • Clear Acrylic Spray Paint or Paint Sealer

Step 1: Clean the Blanks

Ceramic blanks, if unsealed, can be pretty dusty which can make it hard for paint to stick. An easy way to get rid of this dust is to wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol.

This can discolor your ceramic blank temporarily, but once it is dry it returns to it's original color.

Make sure to let all the isopropyl dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Paint!

Use your thermocolor paint to paint your blanks! Pretty self explanatory.

I recommend an acrylic-based 2-color paint because a single coat gives you pretty great coverage.

Step 3: Seal!

I used Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating to seal the paint.

I did two coats to make sure it was sealed, waiting about an hour in between the coats and I let it dry about 2 hours after the second coat before I used my coasters.

Step 4: Enjoy!

Enjoy your new thermocolor coasters!

Guests will be amazed when they pick up their cup of coffee or tea (or, my favorite, hot cocoa!) to see that their coaster has magically changed colors.
