If you've seen any of my other Instructables from this week, then you know I am thermocolor-crazy right now.

Thermocolor (also referred to as thermochromic) pigment is an amazing and unique substance. This Instructable will show you how to make your very own custom thermocolor nail polish using those pigments!!

What is thermocolor pigment?

Thermocolor pigment is pigment that changes color based on the temperature.

This nail polish will be the normal base color when it is on your nails, but in the bottle or when it gets exposed to cold it will turn the color of the pigment. Mine turns blue whenever it touches room temperature water!

Here is What You Will Need:

Nail Polish (You want a bottle with some room in it, so a used bottle works great!)*
Thermocolor (Thermochromic) Pigment Powder (You can get this on Amazon in whatever color you want, you want the kind that turns transparent at 70-90 degrees F, such as this)*
Index Card
Tape
Nail Polish Remover (In case the polish is too thick after adding the powder)

*Your pigment might mix with the nail polish so the color it turns when cold might be a blend of the nail polish color and the pigment powder. Keep this in mind when picking out your nail polish and pigment powder colors.

Step 1: Make a Funnel

If you're using a new bottle of nail polish you will need to dump some out to make room for the powder. If you do dump some out, make sure you don't dump out the tiny ball, it helps with the mixing.

Make a funnel by taping the index card in a cone shape where the small end has an opening that fits into the top of the nail polish bottle.

Step 2: Add the Powder.

I used about 1/4 teaspoon of powder.

Dump the powder into the funnel and tap the sides to get it all in the nail polish bottle.

Step 3: Shake It Up!

It takes a lot of shaking to get it all evenly mixed, I think I shook mine about 5-8 minutes.

You'll know you are done mixing when it is an even color everywhere in the bottle and you don't see any clumps of pigment powder.

If it seems too thick (mine was) then just add a little bit of nail polish remover to get it to a normal thickness....

Step 4: Apply and Enjoy!

This is officially my favorite nail polish. It is a sheer gold most of the time, but if I touch anything cold, they turn blue!

Mix and match with different colors to make your own unique custom thermocolor nail polish! People will be amazed when they see your nails change colors before their eyes!
