Use ice an unusual way by using it to tie dye! Learn how to ice tie dye to create a unique watercolor dye effect.

Supplies

White Cotton Shirt
Tie Dye Kit - you can also see my recommendations for the best tie dye kits.
Soda Ash (if the kit doesn't have soda ash)
Zip Ties or Rubber Bands
Ice

Step 1: Soak and Tie the Shirt

Soak the shirt in a soda ash mixture (1 gallon of water for 1 cup of soda ash).

Then squeeze out the excess liquid and scrunch up the shirt as though you're doing a crumple dye. Tie it with the zip ties or rubber bands.

Step 2: Elevate It

Place the shirt in the dish, but elevate it on some empty containers or a wire rack.

Step 3: Add Ice

Add the ice cubes on top.

Step 4:

It's important to wear a mask when working with powdered dyes - you don't want to inhale them.

Sprinkle the powdered dyes over the ice. Use as many colors as you'd like.

Step 5: Let It Melt

Let the ice melt. The ice should melt within 12 hours, depending on the temperature and the amount of ice used. Even after it's melted, I recommend letting it sit for a full 24 hours.

Step 6: Rinse and Wear

Rinse it out in the sink and then wash it in the washing machine. After running it through the to dryer, your is ready wear! You can see more of my tie dye shirt techniques and designs here.
