Windows 10 on Your HP Stream 7!

Or other similarly cheap tablet~

Were you one of the people that bought a $100 Windows 8.1 tablet? Do you love your tablet? Well, my answer is yes to both! I freaking love my little HP Stream 7! While it doesn't have enough power for anything intensive, I love being able to use it at my job as an IT tech!

If you're like me, you'll want to get Windows 10 on your Stream 7 as fast as possible!

Unfortunately, if you actually used the tablet, you will find that you probably wont have enough space to install Windows 10 if you go through the standard upgrade procedure. Instead it'll just say "Something Happened".

Great job Microsoft... you've succeeded in making an error message even more cryptic than your usual ones.

After researching this issue and spending a day or so working on this problem, I've decided to create my own tutorial to help those in need!

This tutorial should apply to any of those Windows 8 tablets that only have 16 or 32gb of space.

Step 1: Supplies

The Windows 10 install took several hours for the initial upgrade. You'll probably want to find a good power supply (the cable that came with my Stream 7 died after a few months).

In addition to a good power supply, my procedure uses a USB drive to temporarily store Windows 10 installation files. You'll need at least a 4g flash drive that can be overwritten temporarily for this procedure.

You'll also need a microSD card or second USB drive that can store 9gb or more for mandatory Windows 8 recovery files.

Then you'll need to find a way to connect both USB OTG and power at the same time. You might be able to get away with supplying power to the tablet then connecting the USB drive later, but in the interest of the least riskiest solution, I'll say that you need to find a way to connect power and USB at the same time.

This is also an option but it costs just as much as your tablet does, so as cool as it is, I do not recommend it.

Step 2: Downloading Windows 10!

If you're reading this ible, you're probably rocking a cheap tablet. In which case, you'll want to download the 32 bit version.



1. Once it's downloaded, run it.
2. Click Create installation media for another PC
3. Pick your language, pick Windows 10 Home (since that's the only one you're elligible for)
4. And Pick 32-bit.
5. Pick USB Flash Drive (needs to be at least 3gb large)
6. Select your drive and proceed.


In an hour or so, you should have a Windows 10 flash drive! yay!

Step 3: Install Windows 10!

Navigate to your new Windows 10 USB Drive

Double click on setup

Click on Not right now at the Get important updates screen. ( I was worried about running out of space)

Click Next

Accept the agreement and continue with the installation. Pick what you want to keep etc.

At some point it may tell you that there is not enough space to continue with the installation. At this point, you can point it to your microSD or an external HDD to store the Windows 8 Recovery files.

Continue until it starts the upgrade process.

At this point you'll probably want to go take a nap, or go to work or something that involves killing lots of time. For me, this process took over 3 hours.

Step 4: Windows 10!... But Not Finished!

Horay! You should've have windows 10 mostly installed!

Now, if you're like me, you should have Windows 10 installed and running. May be a little jerky and you'll have even less free space than before, so I'll tell you what we're gonna do.

Go and save any and all of the files you want to keep onto an external drive and we're gonna use the built in OS reinstaller to freshen things up.

After we're done, you'll have around 20gb of free space!

Make sure you have anything worth saving backed up before continuing because you will lose EVERYTHING that is not backed up!



1. Click on the search icon next to the start bar
2. Type Startup
3. Click on Change advanced startup options
4. Click on "Restart Now" under Advanced startup.
5. Wait for your computer to reboot...
6. Click Troubleshoot when the blue screen comes up
7. Click Reset this PC
8. Click Remove everything
9. Continue until your PC starts refreshing itself.


Grab another beer/nap something as it's gonna take a few hours again.... :) but be happy knowing that your tablet will be snappier, happier, and much better than before!

Step 5: Cleaning Up!

So by now, your Windows 10 should've reinstalled itself and you're able to login.

As you will probably notice, Auto-rotate will no longer work, windows button will no longer work

Then CHANGE your operating system to Windows 8.1

I would recommend to download and install pretty much everything, but to make things a little more complicated here's what you actually need:

• Driver-Controller
  
  • Kionix G-Sensor Enabling Driver
• Driver-Driver Pack
  • Intel Chipset, Graphics, Camera and Audio Driver Pack

I believe those two should be the bare minimum to get everything working again. If I'm wrong, go there and download and run more stuff lol.

Step 6: Finished!

You're all done! You should have about 20gb of free space (on an HP Stream 7) and a lean, clean, awesome Windows 10 tablet machine!

At this point you can start pulling your files off of your external drive and dumping them back on your tablet.

Don't forget to run Windows updates! Oh, and explore what the edge gestures do now. They work differently, but are mostly a step forward.
