Introduction: Working Out Area

I am completing this Instructable to find out how useful this tool could be as a learning and teaching tool.

The objective of this is to inform you how to work out the area of a square and then have a go yourself and see if you have understood the process. Please fell free to give me feedback on this to let me know how you find the information and whether you found it useful or if you can think of any changes i could make

Step 1: What Is Area

The AREA is the centre part of a flat or 2D object.

The idea is for me to show you how to calculate this.

Step 2: What Is Area Worked Out In

The idea of AREA is for you to identify how many squares fit in the centre of your object. as you see from the picture i have labeled a 1m square to show you what you are looking for.

Step 3: Counting Squares

As you can see here what i have done is to split one side into 5 pieces and the other side into 8 pieces thus creating lots of 1m squares.

One way of working out area is to do this and then count how many squares you can see

so in the centre of this object is 40 squares thus the area is 40m²

Step 4: Using a Calculator

The other process is very similar to counting squares however you use a calculator.

so you split the shape in 5 pieces and then 8 pieces so your calculation would be 5 x 8 = 40

So your answer will be again 40m²

One way to remember to write ² is you used 2 numbers to find the solution 5 (1) and 8 (2)

Step 5: Your Turn

Now here are some shapes for you to work out the Area to. please have a go at these and then move on to the next stage

Step 6: Answers

Here are the answers to the previous questions starting from the top left

7m x 8m = 56m²

6m x 7m = 42m²

9m x 5m = 45m²

10cm x 11cm = 110cm²

How did you do? Did you get them all correct
