3d scan -> 3d print -> metal casting / large sculpture construction?

Hello Mikaela, thanks for this very detailed lesson. Here my further questions about ReMake.: Is there a function in ReMake to make the scanned model hollow with a certain wall thickness? So basically offsetting the outer surfaces to the inside about 5mm .... I do metal casting and this would be helpful for me. I have managed to do it in Meshmixer but it was not so easy and the limit was 4mm that it will offset at once. Placing the cutting planes in Meshmixer was by "eyeballing it" How about cutting up objects into multiple sections in a mathematically controlled way for 3D printing in many pieces? (e.g. making a specific sized array of cutting planes according to ones print volume size and autocutting the model according to these? How about making connectors for these different pieces to fit together after printing? Sorry maybe difficult questions but all of these are features that I am looking for.... I am used to the security of parametric modeling and this "organic" type of 3d modification is new to me. I would love to combine the best of the two techniques. Attached some photos to clarify what I mean. Of course this was not a 3d scan (did not find a live Vaporeon to scan AND moving objects are not possible to 3d scan as thoroughly learned during this lesson ;-) but the challange was a bit the same. I downloaded a "dumb" mesh in STL form from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1754718 and went on to modify. I am thinking that perhaps in ReMake this would be easier .... maybe. Seems like Autodesk is actively developing it at the moment. Can you also import STL files into ReMake and modifiy or is it only able to read its own point cloud scan data? Hopefully I am not asking to many questions that you have already answered in your lesson but I was to ADHD to notice? I am on a computer without sound so I did not watch the videos....

Hi! These are all very good questions, and you obviously understand what you are doing! :) I'm not sure I can fully answer all of them but I will try to find someone who can. I know that people here at Instructables and Autodesk where I work have tackled some of these problems, so I'm sure there are answers. In general I would say that ReMake is not where you will be able to do most of the things you are wondering about. The editing features of ReMake are not very complex and only designed to make basic repairs.

I think the best tool for doing most of what you are talking about would be Fusion 360 (which is free!). I explain how to import meshes into Fusion and convert them into T-spline bodies and solid models in this lesson, but in the last month Autodesk released a function that allows you to directly edit meshes in Fusion without converting them! This is super exciting and I think it might help you do what you want! I know you can create shells with different thicknesses when you are working with T-splines in the Fusion sculpt environment. And I think the Slicer for Fusion plug in (which incorporates what used to be 123D Make right into Fusion) might have a tool that will cut up your model into 3D printable sizes. You can definitely import other STLs into ReMake. Do this on the dashboard by clicking “Load a model” in the ‘My Computer’ section. Then you can choose an STL from your computer, upload and open it.

I hope this answers some of your questions, I'll ask around more about shelling meshes and cutting up models. Also, your work is really amazing!!! :)
