Any tips for get the tap started straight?

Many times the hardest part for me is getting the tap started at a right angle. Any suggestions for getting it right?

Practice :)

But... if you are doing a lot of taps, a $100 tapping machine is extremely useful.

If you have a drill a press, there are also some tap handles with a divot on the top end. You can put a large transfer punch into the chuck of the drill press, and lower it down into the divot. This can be used to improvise a really nice vertical alignment tool (just - obviously - don't turn the drill on).
