To reset move the hold button ( on top of the ipod) once to hold then back to original position.

Do the steps that other people mentioned... but I would also add that there could be a driver issue. If that is the case, go to device manager (Comment with your operating system if you need me to explain how to do this), find your iPod, open the properties, click the driver tab, and click update driver. Assuming your computer is on the internet, it should be able to update the driver if there is a driver issue. Good luck!

Just a few (possible) solutions

Check USB cable, and port. a few of my USBs dont work with my ipod sync, but ones directly onto motherboard seem to work fine. Try using a different usb cable too.

Reset the ipod by holding the home and power buttons for 10 secs, or until you receive the apple logo

Put your ipod in DFU mode (might require a restore)

Put it into recovery mode (requires restore)

I started to do a long write-up on how to troubleshoot this, then I remembered that Apple has already done the hard work. Check this link for troubleshooting steps for your device. It is very readable and goes through all the steps you need yo fix this issue. If you still have trouble re-post and we will see if we can help you.

Assuming the iPod is functioning properly, re-install iTunes on your computer. If that doesn't fix it, check the device manager and look for any hardware conflicts.
