Build a Small Tesla Coil

I need you help bright minds of Instructables!
I want to make a very small Tesla coil and I have the right schematic! But I still remain a n00b in electronics...
This schematic is used in:
Help me build the schematic below... I would be very grateful to one who makes the schemactic in Eagle or other program that shows everything connected together.
Thanks you very much!

If you can't get the parts for this, then try Steve Ward's micro SSTC. I built one from a computer power supply and some free samples (The 555 timer and UCC37322 Driver)!

You're welcome
thermoelectric in reply to thermoelectricFeb 25, 2009. 12:38 AM
This should be it

I hope I didn't miss any connections
PS the VSS and VDD are the power for the IC and the connections for the power.....

Yay! Thanks! I think I can make everything out here... What value is VSS and VDD??? Thanks!
thermoelectric in reply to comodoreFeb 25, 2009. 9:21 PM
VDD= Positive
VSS= Negative

Those values you might use again so here's a link
comodore (author) in reply to thermoelectricFeb 26, 2009. 1:08 AM
ooo OK Thanks!
thermoelectric in reply to comodoreFeb 26, 2009. 2:09 AM
You're welcome, Be sure to tell me (and Plas) if it works...
comodore (author) in reply to thermoelectricFeb 26, 2009. 3:14 AM
Will do, but still, I can't find all the components I need to realize this project... :(
thermoelectric in reply to comodoreFeb 26, 2009. 12:42 PM
Yeah...
comodore (author) in reply to thermoelectricFeb 27, 2009. 2:08 AM
Do you know any on-line electronic store that ships to Europe?
thermoelectric in reply to comodoreFeb 27, 2009. 2:24 AM
Possibly Farnell, Plasmana gets his parts from them and he's in the United Kingdom...
comodore (author) in reply to thermoelectricFeb 27, 2009. 3:16 AM
Yea, I know that site and they don't have those diodes... I checked.... Thanks!
thermoelectric in reply to comodoreFeb 27, 2009. 3:52 AM
Oh, Just search them i\on Google, You will most likely get a supplier of them.
comodore (author) in reply to thermoelectricFeb 27, 2009. 10:28 AM
Yea, good idea, will do that! Thanks!

rippinblaise in reply to thermoelectricApr 14, 2009. 9:54 AM
do you have the eagle file, not the jpg? if you do, pm me.
thermoelectric in reply to rippinblaiseApr 14, 2009. 4:09 PM
Willyou be using the Eagle file to make a PCB out of? If you are, some of the parts aren't real.... (The driver IC, I had to just put a line where the enable pin should have been because I couldn't find that chip in the Eagle library. )
rippinblaise in reply to thermoelectricApr 14, 2009. 5:07 PM
that is what i was going to use it for you could download the library it's in or i could i guess can i have the file though?
thermoelectric in reply to rippinblaiseApr 14, 2009. 5:20 PM
I'll give you the file but the thing with the enable pin won't work on a board because it is not the right part...
Goodhart says: Feb 23, 2009. 7:40 AM
Are 2 interrupters involved, or just one attached at the enable pin?
comodore (author) in reply to GoodhartFeb 23, 2009. 8:13 AM
I am really not shore, my guess is 1.
miiwii3 says: Feb 21, 2009. 5:15 PM
look I'm an electronic genius i can build anything electrical but this is a little difficut. you know what as I was wrighting this I think I just figured it out tell me if I'm right or not. You need to connect the driver a from the ocilator to the drive a on th diver same with the drive b. Now the interupter cable has a output cable called enables connect that to enables on the driver. I forgott to check to check the links links so I'll post another comment to end your troubles. looks cool to so I'll have to build one too.
guyfrom7up in reply to miiwii3Feb 21, 2009. 7:36 PM
very subtle there :P yellow wire-goes to RF ground (say, a copper water pipe, don't use the 3rd prong in your house because it might damage all of the equipment in your house, but it might not matter since this is tiny) in the schematic simply connetc A to A and B to B, lol, not rocket science here. darn straight it goes from 12 volts to a higher voltage :P but unlike a conventional coil where there's high voltage in the primary (several kilovolts) it's all done at a lower voltage (say, 12 volts in this case) at higher current. More about the circuit: The 4 diodes are for preventing inductive kickback (ie large negative voltage) uhhh... I don't feel like looking up the chips now, but basically it self resonates (duh)

Could you please tell me are the components(HEF4049 ; IXDD414 ; UF5408) that I found on this site: http://export.farnell.com/ , the components that I need for this project?
Can't find it, do you know a store that sells these and ships them to Europe...

  • UF5408
Here there a re 2 group and one group has 1 product and the other 3, witch, precisely diode do I need???
http://export.farnell.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp;jsessionid=YDEIFA2WGNGCYCQLCIRZKBQ?N=0&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=UF5408&Ntx=&suggestions=false&_requestid=527443

Thanks!
Grateful comodore!
guyfrom7up in reply to comodoreFeb 22, 2009. 3:14 PM
HEF4049 is a chip containing multiples inverters (high in=low out, low in = high out, high=12 volts, low = gnd/0 volts) that have high current capabilities.

IXDD414 is a highspeed mosfet/igbt driver

UF5408 are very fast diodes

your links all lead to a country page, probably cause I'm in the US
comodore (author) in reply to guyfrom7upFeb 23, 2009. 3:47 AM

-Yea, that you chose your country and you enter the site...
Please enter the site and do a search for :
  • HEF4049 (only 1 product and yes, it's a chip)
  • IXDD414 ( 0 products, where can I find that diode, do you sell them???) :D
  • UF5408 ( 4 products in total separated in 2 groups)
Please, look at the products and tell me if they are the right ones???
Thank you!
comodore (author) in reply to guyfrom7upFeb 22, 2009. 5:46 AM
The small Tesla coil with the spark gap that you are making, what did you make the top out of...aluminium foil??? Thanks!
guyfrom7up in reply to comodoreFeb 22, 2009. 8:44 AM
I carved a toroid out of styrofoam, dunked it in polyurethane, and then coated it with aluminum foil. I think I'm going to make a new one, this one had too many bumps.
comodore (author) in reply to guyfrom7upFeb 22, 2009. 10:53 AM
Cool, a real proses.... You are really into this stuff! :D
comodore (author) in reply to guyfrom7upFeb 22, 2009. 5:41 AM
Thanks guyfrom7up! I knew where to connect A and B but what about the Interrupter, where does the enable wire go??? Also, Vcc, whats that? Thanks !
guyfrom7up in reply to comodoreFeb 22, 2009. 8:43 AM
Vcc in this case is probably +12 volts In most schematics, though, like with microcontrollers and such, Vcc is 5 volts. Most common values for Vcc: 3.3, 5, 12 In this case 12
comodore (author) in reply to guyfrom7upFeb 22, 2009. 10:57 AM

http://www.instructables.com/id/Step_By_Step_Plans_to_Building_a_250000_Volt_Tesl/connect the enables in the interuppter to the 2 enables in the driver circut. the 2 antennaes must go to the coils a.k.a. the white wires in the second pic the yellow wire must be ground. I don't know 4 sure if i am right so build the circut how i told you and build a tesla coil how this guy did. The way I see it is your are boosting the power off a 12-18 vlt battery to a highr voltage a.k.a. the driver circut and connect the out put to the tesla coil. I only did this for the small one with a door nob for a ball so i don't know if this will work fo the the second mini tesla coil. I hope this helped you If it didn't go to my account and post your Question there.
comodore (author) in reply to miiwii3Feb 22, 2009. 5:44 AM
Thanks miiwii3...you did help a lot...now its time to gather materials and get this project started... :D
miiwii3 in reply to miiwii3Feb 21, 2009. 5:39 PM
that is the link at the top to how to build tthe coil sorry I don't have the schematic program on ths computer.
comodore (author) in reply to miiwii3Feb 22, 2009. 5:45 AM
OK, the pictures re to blurry but I think I can make out everything.... Thanks!

You gave me a link to member Plasmana... Why?
Kiteman in reply to comodoreFeb 22, 2009. 2:43 AM
He's our resident high-voltage expert. Have a look at his Instructables.
comodore (author) in reply to KitemanFeb 22, 2009. 5:38 AM
I know... I asked him first on his orange board but he wasn't shore... He told me he could build a small Tesla coil easy but he doesn't have the $$....
The_Vinninator says: Feb 21, 2009. 2:57 PM
so do you want the schematic explained? or do you want a drawing? or a picture? or what exactly? can you be slightly more specific? also, does this have anything to do with the electromagnet you were making?
comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 21, 2009. 4:47 PM

do you want a drawing?
  • Yes, that would be very very very helpful....Thanks
or a picture?
  • Shore, why not... :D
do you want the schematic explained?
  • If I get the drawing or a picture, I think that will not be needed...
can you be slightly more specific?
  • Yes, look up... :-D
also, does this have anything to do with the electromagnet you were making?
  • No...I am just working on multiple projects at the time...first I want to do the Tesla coil and than....
Thanks!
The_Vinninator in reply to comodoreFeb 21, 2009. 8:05 PM
sorry, this might take a while you're not it a rush, are you?
comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 22, 2009. 5:35 AM
No rush, take your time... Thanks!
The_Vinninator in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 21, 2009. 8:46 PM
done! hope you can understand this a little better

comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 22, 2009. 5:53 AM
huh..Thanks! :D I think I can make out everything.... :P Do you think you could use Photo Shop or some other program and cut each segment and attach it, maybe... i am very grateful for this drawing but when working with High Voltage I want to be 100% I am connecting everything as it should be! Thanks!
The_Vinninator in reply to comodoreFeb 22, 2009. 10:40 AM
you mean zoom in on each part? sure, I can do that

diodes are very forgiving if you use the wrong one by accident, it shouldn't change the process much at all I'd tell you, but the site is down right now, sorry pal I'm working on the image this is taking really long
comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 23, 2009. 3:36 AM
I'm working on the image -Yay! Thanks a lot! Take your time, I am not in a hurry! :D
The_Vinninator in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 22, 2009. 1:57 PM
sorry, I just checked the schematic anything with that serial number will work so ya, you've got what you want
comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 23, 2009. 3:36 AM
Yay, so...I think I will order some of these in a few days... And about the IXDD414??? Do you know where I can find it or do you know a replacement... The diodes UF5408...Witch one from the 2 groups you suggest I use? Thanks!
comodore (author) in reply to The_VinninatorFeb 22, 2009. 11:31 AM
Yea, or maybe use Eagle or some other program for more clarity.... thanks!
