Actaully, a simple way to do this is to use zip compression

If you store the contents you wish to protect in a zip file, then store that zip file into a password protected zip file, then a password will be required to access the information.

I suggest that the compression method is a simple storage rather than actually compressing it.

This could be accessed with anything that has zip compatability.

However, to do this, you will need 7-zip (or some similar zip-ing agent) because Windows dislikes you zipping zip files.

Gets the job done for the very basics.

Downside: you won't be able to update this with an easy drag-and-drop, you'll need to repack it each time you wish to add a file to the protected content.

Another downside: If your private content is greater that 4GB, and you're storing this on something like a flash drive, then you will need to convert the volume to an NTFS file system (since your flash drive likely has a FAT or FAT32 file system, which has this 4GB limit)

If you do convert your volume, be sure to turn off the indexing option, otherwise you will likely screw up the volume, and will need to reformat. (You can turn off this option via "Properties" of the volume in the "General" tab)

Always try to "Safely Eject" an NTFS flash drive... ALWAYS. I have lost GB's of data from not doing this.

FAT or FAT32, doesn't really matter, just don't pull it out when in the middle of copying something...
