I got this in a box of old things. Can anyone tell me what it is?

orksecurity me to it, it's a 100% electricity free soldering iron! For use, just grind back the rust and put it in a fire / under a propane torch, and use a rod of solder. Only for metal work, not for electronics and other small applications of solder.

Exactly right. I have one almost identical to that one in a box of old tools that belonged to my dad. I've also got the gasoline fired blow torch he used to heat it up. He used it mostly to solder/weld lead flashing together for roofs and around chimneys.

Yep, you guys have it right, old heat 'em up by fire soldering iron. My grandfather had one. Used it in his plumbing job.
