Casting a L.E.D. into a silicone / rubber mold?

I completed your mold masking and casting class. It was excellent and I cannot wait to try my hand at casting clear objects. I would like to illuminate the casted parts with a L.E.D..... could you further explain how easy or how hard this would be..... Many many thanks for a wonderful and very educating class. I look forward to enrolling in many others.

Hi Marty,

Thanks for taking my class! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

Re: Illuminating cast parts with LEDs:

Although I've never done it, I would imagine that is totally possible!

The housing that holds an LED is already a fully enclosed plastic part, so if you sink it into a casting material that doesn't shrink like resin or silicone, right after it's poured (suspending it/them in place with a bamboo skewer), it should become one with the cast! Remember to leave the wires that connect to the anode & cathode sticking out of the cast material so that the LED is still be wirable!

To learn more about LEDs and how they would work best for your project, I would recommend taking randofo's LED & Lighting class.

Hope this was helpful!

Best,
Paige
