Why do many recipies call for both baking powder and baking soda?

That's a great question that I'm not sure the answer to! When both are used baking powder does the majority of the work since it is already mixed with an acid. You could certainly omit the baking soda (if a recipe calls for both) and use baking powder in it's place in equal amounts.
