Could Spock become a Jedi?

I know Star Wars and Star Trek are in a different time, galaxy, etc., but hypothetically, could Spock (or any Vulcan for that matter) become a Jedi? The reason I ask is because I am under the impression that Jedi must be able to use their feelings and instincts in order to use the force. Vulcans bury their emotion and generally avoid acting on instincts and intuition, because it's not...logical. Therefore, I believe Vulcans would have great difficulty becoming a Jedi. Spock, however, is part human and part Vulcan, so wouldn't he make the ultimate Jedi? His Vulcan part would make him technically sound, and his human part would make his emotions/instincts present, but not overwhelming, right?

...ASSUMING HE WAS YOUNG ENOUGH!

Live long and prosper and may the force be with you. :)

All depends on his medichlorion (sp?) count.
RavingMadStudios in reply to frollardFeb 17, 2010. 6:39 AM
Remember the good old days before the prequels, when the Force was a mystical energy field that permeated all of existence? And through study and meditation, you could learn to sense and work with it?
Turns out, it's just a viral infection, kinda like space herpes. I feel ripped off somehow....
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to frollardFeb 17, 2010. 12:51 PM
Ha ha. That's a good point. I suppose it does.
thepelton in reply to RavingMadStudiosFeb 17, 2010. 4:53 PM
I agree. I thought it kind of cheapened the whole thing.  I preferred the series before they got into all this "midichlorion" stuff.
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to thepeltonFeb 18, 2010. 3:36 PM
Yeah, well they care most about making more money than preserving the proud reputation of Jedi, so...

WORD!

midichlorians?...

It goes against what Obie Wan Kenobi explains in A NEW HOPE.
RavingMadStudios in reply to Doom2099Feb 19, 2010. 8:37 AM
Yup. Watching "The Phantom Plotline" for the first time, I'm sitting in the crowded movie theatre after standing in line for 6 hours, having barely endured the introduction of the Shrieking Evil That Men Call Jar Jar - and we get to the midichlorion thing. Involuntarily, in my full speaking voice, comes out "His WHAT count? Are you f-ing kidding me?"
Being a person who despises it when people talk during movies, I was mortified at my own behavior. For about 3 seconds, anyway. That's about how long it took for the chorus of agreement to come back from all over the theater.
imshanedulong in reply to thepeltonMar 11, 2010. 3:27 PM
Wthout the midichlorians, it would be fantasy, not sci-fi.

legomaster2000 says: Aug 25, 2010. 5:00 PM
technically, yes. Anyone can become a Jedi they just need to learn how to control their emotions, the force, and their lightsabers
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to legomaster2000Nov 20, 2010. 8:41 PM
Being Vulcan, Spock then has good control of his emotions.
StickStoneBone says: Aug 3, 2010. 11:44 AM
My theory is this, if I get anything confused please correct me. Vulcans aren't supposed to 'suppress' their emotions, they don't even have problems with feeling emotions. It's the outward expression of emotion that can lead to a loss of control. Specifically the base emotions: Fear, Anger, Hate, Lust, Envy etc. I don't think being half Human or half Vulcan gives Spock any greater or lesser ability to become a Jedi. "Being a Jedi" implies not just a sensativity to the Force, but being trained in a philosophy by like minded Masters. Midicloriads aside... You be a Jedi. Be exceptional.
imshanedulong says: Mar 11, 2010. 8:50 AM
Heck no! He is to dependent on projectiles to use a lightsaber and I'm pretty sure his midichlorian count would be WAY to low to use the force, since neither he or his family have any experience using the force. Plus, Star Trek sucks compared Star Wars anyway. Good day sir, and may the force be with you.

This is part of ArchTypal imagery. Anakin is being set up as a Savior figure who's "Father" was nothing less than the Force. Or God depending on your sentimentalities. Mythology is littered with "Half God-Half Man" saviors. Hercules, Achilles, Christ, etc. Most of them are from Roman/Greek sources. This post isn't intended to be controversial or blasphemous but simply pointing out a historically reoccuring image.
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to imshanedulongMar 12, 2010. 4:37 AM
It's implied. The Jedi Counsel would have been aware of him if his father was a Jedi.

imshanedulong in reply to bassclarinet23Mar 19, 2010. 4:17 PM
Pretty Much! But he probobly doesn't. Jedi are usually trained at a young age, like five, and spock never had training that young.

Spock, I believe, would be more similar to a Sith. Sith control their emotions much more than the Jedi (This is as sith history has shown - Anakin is a fluke, and shouldn't really be considered Sith, more of a Gray knight). With Spock's Vulcan heritage and the logic that this gives him, as well as the human heritage that gives him his innate ability to have emotions, he would be able to control the force very well. he just wouldn't be 'jedi', due to the norms and restrictions that title bequeaths.
chadcad in reply to highjackedMay 25, 2010. 3:29 PM
Ahhh... where do you get your intell?  The sith give in to their base emotions like, fear, anger, passion, lust, etc.  While the jedi are more reserved and don't allow their feelings to rule their thoughts.
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to highjackedMar 19, 2010. 8:23 PM
Ah, good point.
bounty1012 says: Mar 11, 2010. 10:27 PM
It would depend on his medichlorion count (Special cells that live in the blood stream.) They allow Jedi's to utilize the power of the force. Just watch the whole Star Wars series and you could probably figure out why he couldn't become a Jedi.
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to bounty1012Mar 12, 2010. 7:36 PM
Yes, being as nerdy as myself I am proud to say I own them all! :)

But how are we to know Spock's medichlorian count? He could be off the charts. (I realize he is WAY too OLD, but assuming if he was nabbed by the Jedi Counsel at the appropriate age...).
bounty1012 in reply to bassclarinet23Mar 19, 2010. 11:19 PM
Well, at the beginning of every star wars movie it says "A long long time ago.... in a galaxy far away..." that tells you that it couldn't happen because star trek's setting is in the future right?
mygong8 in reply to bounty1012May 19, 2010. 1:26 PM
Spock could easily find himself in a galaxy far away in the time of his ancestors whilst returning from a foray into the Gamma Quadrant.
bassclarinet23 (author) in reply to bounty1012Mar 20, 2010. 7:20 AM
" know Star Wars and Star Trek are in a different time, galaxy etc...."

It's a hypothetical situation.
bounty1012 in reply to bassclarinet23Mar 21, 2010. 3:27 AM
However if it was that he was somehow drug into their universe and was able to become a jedi then, he probably could master the force to a point beyond master yoda. He would most likely be a sith lord similar to Anakin Skywalker.

tbcross in reply to bassclarinet23May 7, 2010. 3:36 PM
I know this has been answered but couldn't resist throwing in my 2 cents. Why would Spock possibly want to be a Jedi? I mean really Jedi's seem to possess a somewhat androgynous aspect even on young healthy guys and we won't go into Yoda. Spock however rational is still a guy. I mean when the females go into heat he crosses the galaxy...I'm just sayin..and yes I know I'm showing my nerd side.
Spock rules.

If you haven't noticed, the vast majority of the people on this site would proudly consider themselves geeks, nerds or other comparable words generally used as insults but we merely take it as a compliment and perhaps an admittance of intellectual superiority. If you don't like it, you don't have to discuss such things as Spock becoming a Jedi.

He could totally be a Jedi. Logic dictates that Spock would have to accept the force as real, do to the overwhelming amount of evidence. He already has a good mastery of his emotions, and he's sharp as a tack. What more could he need?

The Force everywhere. All around us. Jedi's use the force by trusting their feelings. They use them as a guide. (Explained on Star Wars IV)

For a Vulcan to trust his feelings and just become a Jedi would make him disloyal.

Being disloyal goes against his Vulcan ways.(Explained Star Trek The Menagerie Part 1)

Even when he used his feelings on The Galileo Seven he explained that he logic dictated to use a emotion.

If the Jedi's entered The United Federation of Planets and enlisted in Starfleet.

He could probably mind meld with a Jedi and learn how to use the force.

And because of his logical unemotional mind he will never go to the dark-side.

Spock could totally be a jedi! the jedi also supress thier emotion in order to compress and utilize them, The Vulcan also are aware of their emotions and the information that is granted by them howerver they are aware also of the havock emotions wreck on people and due to their superior physiology they do not succom to the whims of passion (wild emotions) but rather show VERY subtle hints of feelings in their interactions.

Vulcans have emotions, they just learn to bury them deep inside themselves.  So sure, Spock could become a Jedi.
caarntedd says: Feb 17, 2010. 4:47 AM
Spock is half human, and sometimes struggles to control his emotions. So maybe yes.
