I find that the hot glue takes up too much space and the items end up having space between them. Should I use pressure to make a more secure joint and this would make a thin coat of glue?

I think you can spread the hot glue to make it thinner before applying the pieces you are bonding. Try cutting a popsicle stick and making a blunt edge to form a tiny spade to spread your glue.
