Digital Out on an iMac?
The adapter works fine, seeing how it's just a hollow piece of metal and plastic.
The cable is also working fine - I've tested it with my TV.
The iMac has output, you can see it on the other end of the fiber.
Everything I've checked seems to be working, and there's only one possible explanation I can think of. The iMac is transmitting with a different format. I'm new to optical audio cables, so If there is only one format, aka SPDIF and TOSLINK are the same, please let me know. And if they are not, can someone inform me on what I'm doing wrong and how to fix it?

Is there a soft option on the output format?
One might ask why on Earth you're running Vista on a Mac, and wonder whether the problem might be there?

As far as soft option, I am not sure by what you mean. Do you mean a soft option to switch between analogue and digital? If so, then no. It does it automatically. A digital output is detected, and on the other end of the fiber you can see the light. So it clearly knows its fiber and not copper.
As far as the vista on a mac thing, you have intrigued me. I will reboot to OSX and see whether or not it still persists. Maybe apple just gave me a faulty Mac.
