Does anyone have any advice on making a homemade clock-radio?

I have a radio with a dismembered antenna, and a bright clock, and I want to make them into a "new" clock-radio, maybe steampunk, cyberpunk, or a combination of the two. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was thinking of using the below  intsructable as a jumping off point for a clock radio project of my own . http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn_a_generic_plastic_gadget_in_to_something_a_li/

I have been looking around at the same thing, and many of the clocks I've taken apart have been too junky to change without breaking everything.

My thinking now is to get some stuff from Sparkfun and give it a try - the first thing is a simple alarm clock kit, and the other is a basic FM Receiver breakout.

One of the other paths I've thought about is adapting something that's close, like these that Google led me to - one, two.

Have you tried anything yet? How did it go?
