Firefly, Ripper Street; What style is the music?

Can anybody put a name to the style of music employed in the Firefly and Ripper Street themes?

American Folk music is probably the best classification for the Firefly theme. The genre, especially over the past century, has typically had political and socialist overtones, viz. unionization.

Folk music borrows extensively from traditional American country music (as noted by MPilch), in terms of both melodies and lyrics, so there is substantial overlap. Good examples of ostensibly non-political folk music include the early Grateful Dead, The Limelighters, and The Kingston Trio. Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie are far more politically/socially motivated examples.

Well said.

I agree with kelseymh on the genre classification, however you won't find much of what you are looking for that way.

The best, "Genre Search" I've used for this type of music is "Instrumental Appalachian."

A few artists and albums that may peak your interest as well:
The Rodeo Eroded by Tin Hat Trio

Any of the instrumental music from the soundtrack of Stephen King's The Stand

The soundtrack from the HBO series "Deadwood"

Hope this helps!

Thank you!

Country
See my top-level comment. I think "country" is too broad a genre to apply here. For the Firefly theme, especially, the more political overtones of American folk music (in particular, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan) are a more appropriate comparison.

That said, I think this is an excellent topic for debate, wherein "honest men may disagree."

As simple as that? No sub-genre?

(I don't fancy accidentally looking like a fan of Dolly Parton...)
It would be true country not like the stuff they call county now days. If you wanted to narrow it more you could call it folk music. Or space country folk.

Oh-kay....

That doesn't seem to be an option on Amazon...

Interestingly country music has its roots on Scot-Irish immigrants.
