Football question(American)?

is a football still live if it bounces off the ground......my freinds say it is but my coach told me that as soon as the ball touches ground its a dead play also do you guys have any tips for a "rookie" cornerback

if someone has possession then drops it it is a fumble(a live ball) if the carrier has the ball then is tackled and the ball gets away then it is USUALLY a dead ball but just to make sure i would look up the football rules for your age group (varsity,junior varsity,middleschool,college,pro, and anything under middle school)
