Galvanized steels?

Hi, great lesson!! Question: is there any trick to recognize galvanized metals, a part from the aspect (which may mislead) ? Thank you in advance!

I had an old shop teacher tell me to try to measure the surface's conductivity with a voltmeter. If it is conductive, weld away! The zinc coating on the surface of the steel will impede the flow of current across the surface.

This is COMPLETE nonsense. Zinc is also conductive and you will not be able to distinguish zinc from Iron by measuring it's conductivity.
