Grilling steak direct & indirect?

For using the grill would it make sense to sear on the hot side then finish on the indirect/low side? That seems to copy the skillet-oven method.

Yes, that's right!
I like my steaks rarer, so I actually do almost all the cooking over the direct heat to get the sear on both sides, then move it over to indirect for about a minute before resting.

Experimentation with your setup will yield different results.
