Hello, Im a bit new to electrical things and was wondering

 Hello

I was wondering how I would go about making a LED display turn on with the click of a button using IR.  And then turn off with a second click.

It would be great if someone could provide a schematic for me as well, thanks.

I have attached a very simple schematic that will do what I think you are trying to achieve. I had to use an opto-isolator instead of an IR LED and IR sensor, because my CAD software doesn't have an IR sensor, but it works in pretty much the same way. The circuit will turn on the LED when given a pulse of IR light from the remote, and off again when pressed again. This is assuming you want to do it all yourself though, as iceng said, if you want to use a TV remote, it will be a lot harder. You will probably need a micro controller to respond to a cerain pulse, as TV remote flash IR light in different pulses. This also means that your circuit may be susceptible to flashing on/off if used in the presence of other IR remotes.

So if I replace the opto-isolator with a IR sensor, I wont need to change anything else?
pretty much, just use an IR LED in place of the LED in the isolator, and IR sensor in place of the photo-transistor (unless you have an IR-sensitive photo-transistor, but I think most work on visible light too). Also, the voltages are nominal, I doubt you have a 2v and 6v battery, so you will need to add resistors or regulators to get the correct voltage from whatever your supply voltage is.

So for the Clicker do you want to use your TV control, or DIY all yourself or a kit ?
