How can I hook up a VCR video drum motor to a microcontroller or other power source, without the big VCR circuit board?

It is not a DC motor, I think it is a brushless motor. It's the big round one that moves the the tape.

The drum VCR motor is DC. However it is a brushless motor using a special drive IC and multiple coil windings each of which are energised in turn to obtain rotation. Most recent drum motors have the drive IC built onto a PC board as part of the motor. If it's an older type the control electronics may be separate. You really need a schematic.

I used a VCR drum for my propeller clock. It was an older VCR with its controller chip mounted on a separate PCB. I was really lucky to find a datasheet online. Designs/source/etc is here:

If you take the motor out of the VCR by desoldering it toy can hook it up to whatever you want.
