How can I improve my coil gun's coil?

My coil is made of 22 gauge wire and the inside diameter is about 1/8 in. It's 1 3/4 in long with about 7 layers. The ammunition is a little over an inch and fits snugly inside the coil. How many more layers should I make it, and what else can I do to improve it?

Put a steel tube on the outside.

That will help prevent it from losing the magnetic field right?

Oh yeah! And paint it olive drab green. Oh! And um... stencil some clever words on it, like "CANNED HEAT". I think these would both be worthy improvements. Oh, and uh.. how 'bout a bayonet too? That's for when you have to use it in really close-up type fight.

It will reduce the "reluctance" of the magnetic circuit, making the field you have create more flux.
