How can I make a cheap-and-dirty circuit tracer?

I know that you can buy them, but I'm trying to figure out how to make a device that will follow a household wall circuit on the cheap.

just use a am radio and just make a small gernerater like a am transmiter with the 555 ic any small am radio will work the crapyer the better

Do you mean a continuity trace? Or one to detect wiring behind walls (most anything really sensitive and magnetic will detect metal and water too)?

It is simple enough to make something that will tell you that the current going into that light fixture, comes form here, if that is what you need.
