How can I make a downloadable pattern for an instructable from a piece of paper?

I made a plushie out of nowhere and used a sheet of paper to make a pattern. Now that the plushie is done, I want to make an instructable out of it but I wonder how I can make my paper pattern into a downloadable image or pdf for others to use. I have a scanner but I usually get a bigger image than what I have scanned.

Some scanners (I have a Kodak 5200) allow you to scan directly to a PDF file.

However, it dous not matter what size the image is; the relative proportions are retained, and then others can rescale it to match their fabric.

Thank you all.
Steveastrouk, thanks but I need to be able to do it several times.

My guess is your scanner software is scanning correctly - but your printing software is printing at a different scale.

Most scanners have variable DPI - dots per inch, but that information is saved with the file, so that when you print 'at' scale it will scale that to the printer's DPI.

To be sure, scan a ruller/measuring tape at 600dpi - then load the resulting image in any editing suite - it will retain the 600dpi IN the file and each inch will divide into 600 pixels.
When it comes time to print, make sure you set scaling to 1:1, or 100% instead of 'fit to sheet' etc.

Lastly, if you're unsure, scan your pattern WITH the ruler in the picture - that way when people print it out they know exactly what size it SHOULD be.
Post a link to the scan, tell me what scale its supposed to be, and I'll email you the right size back.
