How can I replace a single wire with an infrared link?

I just want to have a digital communication interface become infrared. I have data going both directions, so I need to have the system be two-way. If possible, I would prefer using radio of some sort. For infrared, would it be as simple as an IR LED and NPN phototransistor at each end?

EDIT: Bad news. The system needs 2 wires to transfer data. Since IR would mix together, I need to use 2 different radio frequencies. Does anyone know how to send and receive simple pulses of radio waves?

Okay. Excellent. Thank you.

It could be. Of course you'll need power supplies and a way to interface to whatever is going to use the data. Depending on the distance you may need lenses to focus.
