How can i generate electricity from heat?

I've got a water heater that runs on fire, plenty of heat escaping through the chimney, is there any way that i can harness some of it?
I'll be happy if i could run a light or something small

A thermoelectric junction will generate electricity when heater/cooled. Just as they heat cool when electricity is passed through them.

To generate significant amounts of electricity is different and you may be better looking at producing steam to run a turbine/generator or a more traditional steam engine.

Of course there is my fav way to convert heat to mechanical effort the Stirling engine.
