How can i make low ceiling rooms, look higher?

THE APARTMENT I LIVE IN, HAS VERY LOW CEILINGS WHICH THE OWNER THOUGHT IT WAS THE WRIGHT WAY TO SAVE ON HEATING. NOW I'M TRYING TO MAKE THIS ROOMS LOOK BIGGER.

All you can do is give the illusion the room is taller, by eliminating or minimizing as many horizontal lines and emphasize the vertical lines. For example, you really don't want crown moldings. If they're already installed, then you'll want to paint them the same color as the wall (same goes for chair rails). Paint the ceiling with a light color (it doesn't necessarily have to be white), and do so with a semi-gloss versus a flat paint, as it will create more visual height; and paint the walls in a light neutral color.

For your furniture, you also want to minimize the contrast. Consider painting out any wood furniture in a lighter color, and use slip covers for your sofa and chairs. You can also get shorter legs for your sofa and chairs (most simply screw in to the bottom), and this will help make the walls appear taller.

Adding mirrors to a room will also help to create a visually larger room (but won't necessarily make the walls appear taller). You should also get curtains that are just slightly darker (or lighter) than the walls, and install the rod further up from the top of the window, and have the curtains hang all the way to the floor. This will instantly make the wall appear taller.

Narrow, vertical stripes will also help, and you can create a nice effect (even on just one wall) by using the same paint color in a flat and semi-gloss (or gloss) finish. The result is more subtle, but visually it will lengthen the wall.

Finally, install your pictures, mirrors etc., higher on the wall than they would normally be hung (at eye level), to create a sense of height.

I hope that helps. I've lived in some small apartments also, and used the techniques here. Just remember, that its a combination of efforts that will help make the rooms bigger.

Mirrored ceiling tiles would have the desired effect.

How low is Low?

Paint ceiling white, paint walls a darker colour - In an ideal graphic world paint vertical stripes on the walls to make them look higher.

Remove any hanging lights and replace with small inset lights.

Most modern ceilings in the UK are not more than 2.5 meters high - slightly over 8 feet

If you're really good at decorating, graduate the walls from a darker shade at the bottom to a paler shade at the top.
