How can we know that enough layers of newspaper have been added?

Hi,

Thanks for the great course, paper macher have become an obsession for me overnight, so I started several small projects at the same time, but at this stage, I have no idea if I have enough newspaper layers on to finalize them and start painting. Does the whole sculpture need to stiff enough then we can use that as an indicator that it is ready??? or is it OK if some parts were not that stiff? Thanks again.

Wow!!! Those are amazing! You have a talent for sculpting. It's amazing the kind of shapes you can create with these simple materials, right?? Do you know how many layers you've added? It also really depends on what you are using your sculptures for and how durable they need to be. When they are fully dry, about 5-6 layers should be fairly hard, but if there is some give to them, that is not the end of the world. If you want a really really hard surface, you can cover the whole sculpture with a thin layer of paper mache clay like Jonni Good does. Gesso and paint will also add some stiffness. Vey nice work, can't wait to see them finished!

Thank you very much, well the class is so inspiring and it is indeed amazing what can be done with just simple newspapers and glue. actually I just wanted to make them like small decorative elements, I started by a core made of newspapers, so they are full not hollow and then added the layers of glue and shredded newspaper to bring the "balls" together, I just don't know when to stop, as some parts are not stiff enough and I didn't know whether to stop and paint or layer it more until they were all hard. In any case, I'm planning to make a larger "library" thing out of leftover boxes... now that one needs to be solid... I don't know how I'm going to make it so far.. but I will definitely keep you updated ... thanks again for everything <3...
