How do I connect an ATMEL AT89S8252 to a computer?

You don't need a lot of hardware round an 8052 to be able to use it. You need crystal, two capacitors and a reset chip ideally. It will need a MAX202 or equivalent to drive a serial port connection.

This particular flavour of 8052 needs to be SPI programmed, like the Arduino, and I wouldn't recommend it as a beginning processor for that reason. An NXP p89V51 can be programmed over a standard serial connection MUCH easier.

In order to do what with it?

Program it? See the sections describing "programming the flash and EPROM", along with the later sections on serial and parallel control.

There's probably a development card/environment for this, though it may not be cheap enough for a low-budget hobbyist.
