How do I make a printed hologram?

Hi all, I found this really 80s button with a cute little eye holograph that blinks. Could anyone suggest how I could reproduce these? I love the fact that the 'resolution' (or the line spacing) isn't very fine and particularly want to incorporate that.

Would love your ideas. Thanks!!

bwrussel almost has it - except you don't print on the sides of the angles - it's too difficult to print a complex image on a complex surface.

What it does is use a series of straight lenses (the lines in the picture) They can be purchased but I've only ever seen them with the picture attached to it, you'll need to be able to remove the old image.

Then to make the 2 frames of the animation, the 2 pictures are compressed vertically, then sliced up into thin lines and interlaced with one another. The picture is placed right behind the lenses.

The incident viewing angle from any given perspective at any reasonable distance will be almost parallel from the topmost to the bottommost lens, so at any given viewing angle all the lenses will focus on only one frame of the animation at a time...and by looking at different angles you see different images.

I have access to a 3d printer, should I print some triangular lines that way and see if it's any good?

To make it work, I'd sort of have to make the lines correspond to the line height, no? or would it work to a degree a little off?

They aren't triangles - they are rounded and act as lenses, like dozens of cylinders sliced vertically to make the bumps.

It appears that this was created by lining up a bunch of triangular solids and then printing the image of the open eye on one face and the image of the closed eye on the other.

As far as making your own, you could measure and reverse engineer the physical specs and then model it. The drawings should then be done by looking normal to each set of faces and simply drawing the design across the faces. Not sure about manufacturing.

wow, thanks for the drawing... it's actually clear triangluar plastic on top of a print, I managed to scratch a bit of the back to make sure.

When the eyelashes and eyeball intersect, the area is completely black, otherwise the areas that don't intersect are on inverse lines... so i guess I have to find some triangular/holographic adhesive covering and match the line height to the printed illustration... would that make sense?

Any ideas on where I should look? Do you reckon they'd have precise measurements? The diamater of the circle is 4mm

Otherwise I'm absolutely more than happy to pay for this to get done.


You could have the ridges printed in a clear material. I'm not sure what kind of clarity you get out of those materials but then you could get any size and shape you want. Then using the dimensions of the ridges you could use photo editing software to precisely cut up and interleave the two photo's you wanted. That's the hardcore DIY way.
I'm sure you can find the plastic material somewhere but short of Google, I'm not sure where.
