How do I write a cover letter for a reporter?

I'm trying to get media coverage for an achievement, and it was suggested that I fill out the press release form. One of the things required is to "Create a cover letter from you that lets the reporter know more about you (hobbies, honors, other awards, or sports)". I tried looking up how to write one of these, but all of the examples were for resumes and applying for jobs. I've never heard of a cover letter, and I'm feeling awfully confused as to how I should write it, seeing as I'm trying to get a little media attention, not apply for a job. Any tips on how to do this or on working with the media in general would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Think of it as a resume, except you can be more flowery in your language and creative with the facts.

thanks kiteman. :)

My son was invited to something that sounds suspiciously like your young Scientists congress. Some Googling determined it was a sophisticated scam. Be careful.

I have done thorough research and invested a lot of time determining that this is a legitimate institution. Now, any chance you could help me with my original question?

If you're going to be quite as rude as that, no.

it wasn't intended to be rude, my apologies. I'm sorry you took it that way.
