How do you build a small High voltage high frequency power supply?

I need the plans/general guidance to build a high voltage/high frequency power supply like the one used here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUQReIW8f1Q&feature=plcp  . He describes it as "A small ignition-coil, driven by a simple NE555-circuit feeds a 2-stage-multiplier. 12kV out...almost no current, but as you see: Enough to start a fire." Im not sure how to build that. 

You posted this three days ago, so there is probably a pretty good chance that you've gained some additional clues in that time.

There is a lot of stuff in the related panel on the right,
similar to what the author of that video is only vaguely describing. For example, this
looks like a good one.

Just to break it down a little bit, to sort of describe this thing as the sum of its parts:

The 555 timer,
is an IC commonly used to make simple oscillators.

Then that oscillator is used to drive a big transistor.

Then that transistor switches current, on and off, to the primary winding of a high voltage transformer.

Switching current on and off to the primary winding, results in a large voltage across the secondary of the transformer.

The author also mentioned a voltage multiplier, a network of diodes and capacitors,

But really the multiplier is only necessary if you are not getting enough voltage from the transformer to make your sparks for you.

Of these parts (555 IC, transistor, transformer), the high voltage transformer is going to be the hardest part to find.  Especially one that is small and light. 

In the comments to that video (http://www.youtube.com/all_comments?v=hUQReIW8f1Q) I found this quote from the author:

"Actually its not a ignition-coil. Its a small HV-pulse-transformer...used for strobes and camera-flash-lamps. You can use a selfwound  transformer as well."

I am guessing he is describing a trigger transformer,

I've never actually tried to make sparks with one of those kind of transformers, but that might work.  A transformer with a very large turns ratio is going to be the most important thing here.

Any way you could post a theoretical design for this thing you describe? I have enough knowledge of general electronics that I could possibly modify an existing schematic to make it fit my purpose, but completely designing one is out of my league at this point.

authored by LargeMouthBass. Step 3 is the one with the circuit diagrams.

I actually built one of these myself, based on a car ignition coil.  Also mine is powered by a brick-like sealed lead-acid battery.  So it is somewhat big and bulky, but I got all of it to fit inside a one gallon plastic antifreeze bottle, and it makes good sparks.  I can upload a circuit diagram for this, if you are interested.
Just a guess,  but one of those tennis racket style bug zappers might have a transformer suitable for making small sparks, and be small enough and light enough for your application.
