What is the metal? Sounds like either pot metal, copper or brass. If it's brass the green stuff is not good for you. You can clean copper with anything with a light acid base like vinegar, ketchup, lemon juice. you have to leave it on there a while. Some suggest with these items that you use salt as a light abrasive. None of these things would hurt metal. If there is a stone in the metal that is a different story. Some stones, shells, opals, pearls can not be put in harsh cleaners so you will have to look into it.

I have had good results using molasses. It works well on rusty steel and oxidised aluminium. I don't know about other metals.
Mix at about 10 or 15 parts water to 1 part molasses. Soak the rusted material for as long as it takes to turn all the rust or whatever into grey sludge (could be a week or more for heavily rusted metal), and then rinse/scrub it off with clean water.
The mixture takes away the rust and leaves the metal.
I thought it was a joke when I first heard of this method, so I tried it on some old car parts, and was surprised how good it worked. Also molasses won't harm you. Horses eat it, so you could probably get it at a pet or farm supplier.
Let us know if you try this and it works for you.
If you have a rock tumbler or ball mill, giving the jewelry a tumble with some walnut-shell polishing media will clean it right up. Otherwise, the vinegar & salt solution is great, especially for copper & brass.

Rust: soak jewelry in vinegar overnight and brush off gently with soft cloth.

Green stuff: I don't know much about it but you could try vinegar as long as the green stuff isn't already part of the metal.

Hope I helped!!
