How do you make edible black icing?

I am trying to make a childs birthday cake I need to put some back shadowing on the cake, most things I have tried taste yuk, I would like some help with nice tasting black icing.

My mom always had me use charcoal (They were in pill form, I believe. Some health thing.) You can get the frosting pretty black, and I don't believe it has any taste to it, but it's been years since I've tried it.

Melt some 85% cocoa chocolate bars, they're nearly black.

instead of icing you could use fondant or modeling chocolate but if icing is needed then food coloring should work or use piping gel

Add black gel food coloring to chocolate icing.
Or settle for dark-brown shadows, again via food coloring if you don't like chocolate.
