How does one go about painting rubber?

I've got a respirator for my ceramics glazing that's begging for customization but I want whatever I do to be permanent.

There are rubber-based paints, which would at least have sufficient flexibility to not flake off immediately... but I don't know what surface preparation would be needed to make them stick to the respirator. Personal reaction: I'd be really nervous about solvents in the paint attacking the rubber. The whole point of the respirator is that it's safety equipment; tampering with it unnecessarily is probably not a remarkably wise bet. Maybe a better answer would be to design some sort of cloth cover for it (making sure that doesn't interfere with the seals) and decorate the cover.
