How does the new iPod Shuffle work?

I lost my First Generation Shuffle recently :( and I'm looking into getting one of the new Shuffles. The thing is, I am not able to find (from online pictures) any sort of volume control, play, pause, etc on it. Am I just missing these, or if not, how does this work?

Finally, there's something about a remote being on the headphones? What if the headphones break or I don't like Apple headphones, am I out of luck?

the remote is on the headphones and besides a hold switch there isn't any controls on the device itself. the headphones you get will have a remote but if they break or you just don't like them you can get one of these:

into which you can put any headphones with a standard headphone plug.

hope that helps

If you didn't buy them through the iTunes music store they shouldn't have DRM and will play on any standard MP3  player including the SansaClip. If you have a few with the DRM, burn them to a CD and then copy the CD onto another music manager.

You will need a different music manager but there are plenty of free excellent managers available. I use RhythmBox on a Linux O.S. but there plenty for Windows systems too.

As for iPods in general, my player is an iPod Classic and I've had no problems with it. It is the Shuffle specifically that I think is either poorly designed or of poor quality.

I'm speaking of the latest model Shuffle, I don't know about the older models.

the remote is tiny, like 1 1/4'' long, so you might hit two buttons at the same time. idk about songs, my sis put them all on my shuffel

smitec08 has already given you the correct answer, but I'll try and give you a bit of advice. My wife wanted an iPod to use when she went to the gym and while doing housework. I bought her a 2GB Shuffle about six months ago. It died less than two weeks later. I returned it to the store and was given a replacement, it died less than a month after that.
Frustrated, I returned it and demanded a refund. The retailer wasn't happy but eventually relented.
I did some research on the net and bought a 4GB SansaClip for about $15 less than the 2GB Shuffle and I have been completely satisfied with it. Not only was it cheaper, it has twice the capacity, an LCD screen, a micro SD card slot, FM radio and voice recorder. And Most importantly, It has worked perfectly.
I just moved all my MP3 files to RhythmBox and was done with it.
