How to control the height of Quadcopter?

Hi,

Is there a way to control the height of the quadcopter using the MPU 6050. I know that the sensors i.e. accelerometers and gyroscope measure the orientation of the copter and stabilizes them but how would u measure or like control the height of the copter? Is the controlling of height depends on the IMU unit of completely on the throtle provided to the motors?
