How to dye wood chips ?

I have access to tons of wood chips I will use in the shrub beds.  What can I use to dye the chips with?  Will water colors work?

Gray or black would be fine.  How do I go about using the charcol?  Thanks.

wood chips plus charcol or ash mixed with water in a big tub and let sit then spill out and let dry wood soaks up almost everything so the color should stay for a while

WHat Kind of wood chips?

You can use plain fabric dye.  There exterior paints actually stains that I would use.  That's exactly what they are made for.

what color do you want to dye with?  i know that you can use charcol and ash to dye grey or black
