How to film 3D videos on youtube?

So if you are unfamiliar here is just one example of a 3d video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBa-bCxsZDk. I know this is an animation, but it uses the same technique. Basically the way these movies are made is by filming with 2 cameras about 3 to 4 inches apart. The video from the right is put on the left, and the left on the right. This way if you are doing the cross eye technique it appears 3d.

My question, is could you film with one camera, and cut off parts from the sides for each to make it appear 3D, even if you only use one camera?

You need two separate points of view -- different images, with foreground and background moved relative to each other -- to get depth perception. Cropping alone can't do it. With some effort in manually manipulating the images you can get a simple-and-ugly version roughly equivalent to having a bunch of cut-outs standing in front of each other, but I don't think that's what you're after.

There are a bunch of 3D-related Instructables. I haven't reviewed them, so I can't advise on which, if any, might be usable for your purposes.

It is possible to do in post, but never looks as good as it does filmed in 3D. Clash of the Titans is a perfect example, the 3D version looks like crap, and such post-effects are threatening to kill the entire genre. If you are serious about it, they have reasonably priced 3D consumer camcorders on the market now, you should check them out.
