There is a branch of robotics called BEAM robotics. It stands for Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics, and Mechanics. There is a book that I can't conveniently think of the name for that has a number of basic projects in it that use parts readily available from dead electronics. I would recommend you send CameronSS a message because he has this particular book.
how do I build a Beetlebot? Please can anyone help me?

The name of the book that sound91 is thinking of is "Junkbots, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels," by Dave Hrynkiw and Mark Tilden. ISBN# 0-07-222301-3

There's a kind of light with a magnifier on it which uses spring to counter balance the position. If motorized this would make a neat robot arm.

The Beetlebot is quite simple. The parts aren't exactly "household" (although that really depends on your house), but they are easy to buy or reclaim from dead electronics.
