How to make a snotty cat happy?

A friend has a cat that just began hissing, nipping and generally being a real snot, what can be done to satisfy the cat again?

The cat may be sick and need to be taken to the vet.

The cat may be reacting to something that has changed in the household.  A new pet of visitor maybe.

The cat may just want to be left alone and in that case you can't make it happy again unless you give it what it wants.

Thanks, I wonder if there might be any other reasons for the cat to act so. I don't think she's sick, she is a house cat, and NEVER goes ANYWHERE.....
Being an indoor cat is no guarantee that the cat will not get sick. It reduces that risk, but infection is still possible, as are all the basic maladies from headaches to broken bones to disease to cancer. If a sudden behavior change occurs, a vet trip is always worth considering.

And by the way, her cat hasn't been washing herself much, usually she's a very clean cat. All she wants to do is hiss, nip, and sleep. any more tips?
That too is a good indication that she should be seen by a vet. As I said: Any sudden behavior change.
I'm with Re-des and Ork, that cat may well be sick and in pain. She needs to see a vet. Ours behave like that when they are ill. We had one, who hissed at her food bowl and us when she was fed- she had a major infection under a tooth.

Kleenex? (or other similarly non-branded tissue whose existance is primarily destined for snot)

Just like dealing with a grumpy pre-verbal human: there's no single answer, you have to figure out what they're grumpy about. Re-design's suggestions are good starting points. Beyond that, it's a matter of either trying to figure out what you did to upset the cat, or trying things until you figure out what the cat wants.

Thanks, and my neighbor's tried, but I'll be sure to give her those suggestions.
