How to make fiber optic filament from fishing line?

i am thinking of making my own fiber optic lamp / toy and was wondering if it was possible to make my own optical fibers from fishing line.

The glass fibers used in these devices are specially designed as "light-pipes", through total internal reflection very little light is lost down the length of the fibres. Fishing line will not work in the same way.

careful...they do have  a great ability to penetrate skin and are a real pain to remove. I have one from the early 1980s...the fibers occasionally fall off for one reasons or another and have gotten them stuck in my hands in the past...problem is they tend to shatter when you grab them with a pair of tweezers. Not a deal breaker, just a "be forewarned" word.
