How to merge 2 images together without using photoshop?

I want to know how people merge 2 images together, but most people tell me to use photoshop, which I'd rather not shell money out for.  Is there any other way to merge 2 images together?

EDIT- so apparently people are thinking I want to merge 2 images together into some mumbo jumbo sh*t.  No.  THIS IS WHAT I WANT:

http://makephotogallery.net is the tool you want.
It's a free online tool to combine multiple images into one image.

Well, I assume you'd like to make a Panoramic image, right?!?

I use Autostitch (http://cvlab.epfl.ch/~brown/autostitch/autostitch.html). It's free/demoware and easy as pie.
DJ Radio (author) in reply to Obi-WahnSep 22, 2010. 1:18 PM
I tried and it says it costs 3 dollars.
Obi-Wahn in reply to DJ RadioSep 26, 2010. 12:14 PM
I downloaded it right before I posted this and there was no word about 3$.

You downloaded the Windows demo, did you?!
DJ Radio (author) in reply to Obi-WahnSep 26, 2010. 2:45 PM
No, it was an iPhone app.

Use GIMP, it's free. After you download it, here's how to do it:
  • Go to file, then open up one of the images you want to use.
  • Go to file, and click "open as layers". Choose the next picture you want.
  • Look at the right sub-window, there should be two pictures now. One should be called "background". Click on the picture that doesn't say "background". Then, change the opacity (it's the slider above the picture list).
And there you have it! Here's an example picture. Hopefully this is what you were asking.

The effect you have demonstrated is not what I want. Something like this is what I want:

Download Gimp. It will let you work with photos and do what you want' AND it's free.
DJ Radio (author) in reply to Re-designSep 21, 2010. 7:27 PM
Tell me how to merge 2 images with GIMP because I can't figure it out for the life of me.
freakyqwerty in reply to DJ RadioSep 22, 2010. 9:31 AM
ifd you click open as layers with both images you may need to erase parts so it show through
seandogue says: Sep 21, 2010. 5:58 PM
There are a host of free "photoshop" type programs. Paint_dot_net and gimp are two that comes to mind. I prefer Paint.Net
Kwitmeh3 says: Sep 21, 2010. 5:27 PM
Well there are free programs to do that.
