How to paint "phrases" or just words onto wood without using stencils. The "phrases" appear antiqued or aged.?

I want to be able to use varied fonts so I dont want to use stencil technique. I don't think its air brushing I want either, I am not sure. I want to take a piece of luan wood and paint it and then add lettering to it. Like the vinyl cling-ons you can purchase for walls in your house.

You could try creating the text you want in a word-processing program and then 'reverse' it and print it back to front. Then take the paper with the printed text on and use a hot iron to press it onto the wood. Since it is already fused to the paper only a small amount will transfer to the wood but it will be enough for you to then 'ink it in' using the above hot soldering iron technique.

Thanks Karnuvap.. Sorry I took so long to respond back.  What type of paper am I using to hot iron it to the wood?  I do have iron on transfer paper here, that may work also.  I realize then I will have to fill in the remaining lettering as you suggested.  Good idea..thanks

you could burn it on. take a soldering iron and get a fine point tip then write whatever you want on it and it burn the top layer of wood making it look brown or black depending on how long you stay in one place.

As for making it look aged, you can first buy a stencil from the sign shop, then when you paint it, use that crackle medium maybe....

You can go to any sign shop and ask them to write out phrases for you, anything you want really. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper then the pre made stuff you get at like Target or something. Right now cut vinyl is around $8/sf. Hope that helps.
