I am a complete and total noob, help me understand microcontrollers?

I am a complete and total noob, like, im an idiot when it comes to microcontrollers. I have no Idea what those 3 or 4 letters/labels on each of  the 12 to however many pins they have, and I need to know what they mean and how to use them in a circuit, and finally how you would program them to work with a circuit? Here is what I know so far: There are a few different types of microcontrollers, well okay a lot. And that's about it =)

Thanks in advance,

Get yourself a book like this www.amazon.com/gp/product/1581124597
Microcontrollers are much the same, once you've mastered the grandaddy othem all (the 8052) you'll understand much of the rest.

So does this book you have here explain almost everything about that microcontroller like, how to program it, how to connect it to circuits using what sockets/pins etc?
Get the book from the library and see.
It shows how all the bits inside the chip work together, and how to program them. Once you get that, connecting it to the outside world should become more obvious.

Like Rick' and Steve' say, this is something you will have to learn, it can't adequately be taught to you here. Both of those are good answers.

.  Exactly as lemonie says. Do some reading and come back with more specific questions. There are many ppl here that will be more than happy to answer specific questions but they just don't have the time to teach a class via comments.

IF you have the time and patience to read through the material www.picaxe.com is a microprocessor system that is easier to programme and has a wealth of support material available for free!! - the system was originally built for the UK education market so is easy to understand.

I used it for 9 years to teach kids how to programme.

They have a super support forum as well for real time questions.
