I need a hydroelectricity project for an eigth grader.

I already got a motor that powers a 1.8v LED. I wanna know the diameter of the wheel that I need [should be within 1 1/2 feet. I'm thinking of powering it with a hand pump that runs for about 20sec.

I also need some ideas on how to make use of the LED. The project is about how we can Hydroelectricity in daily life so Hepl Please :)

You want good head for this.
If you can make a tank at ~6 foot or a couple of metres, pipe down towards the ground you'll get a reasonable amount of pressure. Higher pressure - smaller wheel, higher speed.

Make a Pelton wheel ? Steve
Pelton-wheel is what I was thinking of, morphing into "any old wheel with a good pressure". High tank and you've got the gravitational potential that you'd want to use in the field, hand-pump "no".

I will answer the part of your question about: "how to make use of the LED." In our MODERN houses... the tiny LED is fairly USELESS. But during a power outage... or in a poor village without ANY electricity that little LED would be VERY usefull. If the electricity ever went OFF in your house and you were suddenly plunged into TOTAL DARKNESS... then you realize the great value in having a small candle-power of a light. The tiny light of an led makes the difference between being totally blind... and being able to see a little !! In poor villages, they use kerosene lanterns just to have that tiny light. But kerosene lanterns are dangerous if tipped over and they give off fumes and kerosene costs money that poor villagers cannot afford. As you can see... in those circumstances... the little LED is somewhat of a miracle invention.

A recycled stepper motor from an old printer or scanner will produce a respectable amount of electricity if connected to a suitable water wheel.
