If I am going to make a cardboard shelf, how do i make sure it will be sturdy?

For instance, will the edge of the cardboard just bend and be a floppy piece of bent cardboard? Or is there a specific type of cardboard that i am supposed to use?

Depending on the size and what you need it to support, this could work. . .This is an alternative design that also might be helpful. You could make either larger, depending on your needs, as long as you can find big enough pieces of cardboard.

How much is it going to support over what span? Several ways to make cardboard more supportive. You could glue several layers together. You could make sure that the 'tubes' in corrugated cardboard run the length of the shelf. You could use 'honeycomb' cardboard (looks like a honeycomb with cardboard covering the holes). You could create a box structure for strength.
